Wondering how to take care of that adorable hat with the faux fur pom-pom? Here are the answers!
Know your fiber content
If you purchased your hat from me, first of all, thank you! Second, I only use acrylic yarns for hats, so your hat is definitely machine washable.
If your hat is something other than 100% acrylic or another synthetic fiber, I recommend hand washing, and laying flat to dry, just to be on the safe side. You don't want to shrink or felt your hat by accident.
Remove the Faux Fur Pom!
This is super important! Faux fur poms are not machine washable at all! That glorious fluffy hair will become a shriveled mess if you wash it, and that's not a good look.
My poms are attached with a cable lock on the inside of the hat. Simply untie the nylon cording, pinch the little plastic toggle, and slide the cable lock down and off of the nylon ties. Now your pom will easily pull off the top of the hat.
Set the cable lock and pom aside and you are ready to wash the hat.
Wash/Dry Instructions
I always recommend washing any knit or crocheted item in a mesh laundry bag to avoid any snags from other laundry in the load.
Machine wash your hat in cold water.
Tumble dry on low heat.
Of course, hand washing and laying flat to dry will always have the best results, but sometimes there's just no time for that, am I right?
Re-Attach the Pom
Now that your hat is clean, you can re-attach the pom. Here's how:
Poke the first nylon tie through the hat just off-center from the top of the hat.
Poke the second tie through the hat on the opposite side of the top-center from the first tie. This kind of seats the base of the pom at the center of the hat and helps the pom stay secure to the hat instead of being super floppy.
With your hand on the inside of the hat, pull the two ties tight and turn the hat inside out.
Squeeze open the cable lock and push the two ends of the ties through the hole of the lock.
Pull the ties tight and push the cable lock as snug against the fabric of the hat as possible.
Tie the ties in a bow (double knot if preferred). The cable lock is what is holding the pom on the hat; tying the bow just keeps the cords out of the way.
Re-Fluff Your Pom
If your pom is looking like it's having a bad hair day, don't fret! It can easily be brought back to its former glory. Sometimes simply gripping the pom at the base (where it attaches to the hat) and shaking it back and forth will help it regain its fluffiness. However, if you tried that and your pom is still sad looking, it's time to break out the hair dryer.
Set your hair dryer to low heat and run it over the pom. This will bring all that fluffy squishiness back to tip-top shape, straighten out any kinks, and your pom will look as good as the first day you brought it home.
